See this angelic and innocent looking critter?

That was Misty, the best Weimeraner to ever walk this planet. She eventually grew into those ears. She was the most intelligent, loyal, and loving dog I have ever known. In spite of her smarts or perhaps because of them, she had her moments and making this recipe again tonight caused us to recall one of them.
It was a typical Florida summer evening about 15 years ago. The fire flies sparkled and the warm green grass felt like a foot massage on your bare feet. I had grilled this steak recipe but our kids were playing over at their friends' place a few houses away. So I let the steak rest on the counter and we walked to fetch our kids. We were gone for maybe 4 or 5 minutes.
When we returned, there was an EMPTY plate on the counter. There was literally NO TRACE of the steak. The plate was clean as a whistle, no drippings. There were no smudges on the floor. CSI-K9 couldn't have put a case together. The only evidence at all was one satisfied looking dog. She had the perfect innocent "What?" expression pasted on her face.
Easy Flank Steak Marinade
1 ea flank steak
1/3 cup red wine
1/3 cup soy sauce
1/3 cup oil (back then used vegetable oil, now use olive oil)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon black pepper
Mix all ingredients except the steak.
Score the steak. Back then I didn't know WHAT that meant but my mom explained it. Using a very sharp knife lightly drag it across the steak in 1" intervals in a criss -cross pattern about 1/8" deep. You won't be able to see much of a difference now, but it will show up when you grill.
Marinade the steak in a zip lock bag for 4-8 hours, flipping it hourly. Remove the steak from the bag and discard the marinade.
Grill the steak over direct heat at 500f for 3 minutes. Flip and cook another 3 minutes.

Flip once more and let cook 2 more minutes (total of 8 minutes).
Wrap in foil and let rest for at least 10-15 minutes (away from any dogs). Slice very thinly against the grain. Because you are slicing so thin, don't be afraid that you are burning the steak, you want it dark.

Ever have a dog, cat, bird or other animal steal your dinner?
Our big grill had broke so we were using our small Weber camping grill. We put the pork chops on and I went into the house to grab the platter. My hubby was getting kids into high chairs. I came back out and our outdoor dog was gnawing on the bones. Less than 2 minutes and she ate four pork chops. Sigh. We had hotdogs-and chained her up!
ReplyDeleteI've never scored my flank steak like that before, but I'd love to try it out. I'm a huge fan of soy sauce as a marinade and I think I would love this for it's charred crust. Your steaks looks like it was cooked perfectly.
ReplyDeleteMisty looks like a beautiful dog!
Swiss steak just plated up, doorbell rings, hubby and I spend a very short minute shoo-ing away the solicitor and return to find Tyler (Border Collie Mix) ON the table working on his 2nd steak. I screamed, the dog scrambled and the rest of the food ended up on the floor. I can't remember ever laughing so hard. And then there was the cream cheese incident with the same dog.
ReplyDeleteGod love em. And thanks for this marinade.
Steak looks perfect and I can identify with the dog story. Years ago, we had my new boss and wife over for steaks and In I went in the house to get something. When I returned, the boss advised "that white dog just ate one of the steaks" - still not sure how he let it happen.
ReplyDeleteGreat story! Animals are so funny. Our oldest cat used to steal twinkies out of the pantry - she likes the sweets!
ReplyDeleteThe flank steak looks great. I haven't scored the flank steaks we've cooked - I'll try that next time.
Who me?
ReplyDeleteI love this story.
This looks so delicious - no wonder that cute little darlin' stole it away. Seriously, I love the scored deliciousness that appears to be done to the perfect doneness. I'm printing this one out for Mr. H's cookbook.
ReplyDeleteOur first Airedale was a counter surfer...One time ate an entire Darth Vader birthday cake- black frosting and all..interesting poop the next couple of days..
ReplyDeleteGood looking steak there Chris, yes, that is a meat pooch if ever there was one.
ReplyDeleteFuzzknuckles has gone from being a dog who wouldn't eat a cookie off the floor to a dog who routinely steals food left on the counter. Once, she even drank half of my dad's coffee from his cup without knocking it over. Her latest snack? The fiberglass fluff underneath the gas logs on the hearth.
ReplyDeleteThis looks and sounds fantastic! And yes my black lab can eat the insides out of any sandwich without disturbing the bread and or sides.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cutie - I don't blame her for eating the flank...the marinade sounds amazing.
ReplyDeleteThe marinade sounds really good. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteDaisy, our golden retriever ate an entire plate of very rich chocolate-frosted brownies. Apparently chocolate isn't THAT bad for dogs.
Cheers to Misty! She knew a good steak when she smelled one!
ReplyDeleteThat...looks....amazing! We have to try this one soon. I love the sear with the pink juicy interior. Oops, salivating over the picture. Sorry, keyboard.
ReplyDeleteWe had to run to the store for a moment. Fruitcakes were cooling on the counter. We got one block when we realized our Golden Retriever Alice was in the house. We rushed home and it was to late. She had devoured two very warm fruitcakes in seconds. We stilled loved her. Everytime we make fruitcake we get a chuckle with our memories.
ReplyDeletethat dog is adorable. I have a thing for Weimeraner's though.
ReplyDeleteLeft a little award for you. Bahhh.
My German Shepherd made off with a whole side of ribs & sauce that I left on the counter for less than three minutes. There was no mess anywhere and no trace of the bones or the paper that it was wrapped in.
ReplyDeleteLooks lovely and the marinade seems simple enough. I've never had my dinner stolen (I watch it like a hawk), but as a kid me and my friends did snack on some campers food while they were swimming.
ReplyDeleteThis recipe (and sweet story) make me wish I had better grill skills. i just trust myself indoors more than I should. GREG
ReplyDeleteYour steak looks good. Yummy! I'm gonna try your recipe the next time when I buy some flanks. I don't have pets so my food is safe.. lol.. Misty is so adorable.. Im sure my hubby would love to have a dog like her..
ReplyDeleteHa ha! How sweet! Of course I've had a dog nab a little something. I once had a german short-haired pointer who had an affinity for broccoli of all things. Kind of strange. This looks great (and simple!). Thanks for the recipe and the sweet memory.
ReplyDeleteYou always make the best looking steaks I've ever seen Chris, literally makes my mouth water!
ReplyDeleteMisty is beautiful! I don't ever recall a pet stealing dinner accident but I do remember my dog jumping over the car seat and planting his face straight into my ice cream cone when I was a kid. Also one of my cats (the crazy one) loves to dive into the kitchen garbage can after dinner every night. Gotta love the pets :-)
thanks for the comment on my blog! I'm a follower now you've got great pictures!
ReplyDeleteI like the puppy story - I had a similar experience with a friend's dog another friend and I were dogsitting - he ate all of our wings!
ReplyDeleteAnd great use of pepper jelly!
Misty was one lucky dog! I'm sure the cat did it and not her!
ReplyDeleteChris, you are the man baby! that is one good looking steak...why is it that perfect score marks look so appealling.
The innocent look of pets. When we were first married, my mother would enclose a twenty in the envelope with her letters. Our dog Cinder didn't like the mailman and barked her head off when he dropped the mail through the slot in the door. Often she tore open mail, but she was smart. She never, ever ate the money. Good doggie.
ReplyDeleteYour marinade sounds fabulous. I like soy sauce in mine too.
Sam
I laughed out loud!!! So typical. I had a rottie....he had a sweet tooth. Only he got caught in the act....white icing all over his snout as he chowed on the white cake with strawberry filling!
ReplyDeleteOh ya.....the recipe (blame it on the rum. my memory that is)....YUM!
Just last summer I was having a backyard BBQ for my daughter's birthday. I had the plate of buns a little too close to the edge of the table. I turned around for just one second and the dog was off and running across the yard with a bun in her mouth. And I yelled "Kira! Leave my buns alone" in front of all my guest. Not my most glorious moment ;)
ReplyDeleteMy dad used to have basset hounds for hunting, and you had to watch them, if he was grilling they would get up on the grill with their paws and steal food! Sneaky little devils they were, and it was always my food, that is why I am making up for it now! Ha!
ReplyDeleteNice looking food you have on here...
That steak marinade looks scrumptious!! That bottom picture makes me want to get up right now and go make it. Im gona save this recipe. Hopefully i can find time to try it. great post.
ReplyDeleteAbout 5o years ago I had a Weimeraner, named Hamalton, he was the best, and we hunted birds together, he followed me every where, in the house and out. My mother called him my shadow.
ReplyDeleteLove to grill in Portland, rain or sun I grill.
That is such a coincidence! Misty's full name was "Chris' Misty Shadow" named by my mother.
ReplyDeleteGrilling year round in Portland, that is dedication! Thanks for writing.
our Weimaraner, Misty, would eat anything when our backs were turned and always look so innocent with those expressive yellow eyes. Her successor, Shani, is even worse, but we love her (and the breed).
ReplyDeleteI plan to try your recipe tonight on the barbeque, thanks
I'm using this recipe for the "grill night" we are doing for our women's group - has to be easy and good and this fits the bill! Muchas grass!
